Could you introduce yourself to our readers?
KIKU：Our theme is Japan! And our goal is to make “YANAKIKU” a household name across the world!
YANA：I think our music, stage costumes and videos represent the fun sides of Japanese culture. We hope that people get a taste of those wonders through what we do.
KIKU：So stay tuned! Nice to meet you!
Could you tell us more about your latest release „Up Side Down“?
YANA：Everyday life can get boring sometimes and we all face our own little struggles. So with this song, we wanted to send out a message. “We only live once, so let’s enjoy it with the people we love!” For our music video, we’re dressed in our trademark Kimocos (kimono x cosplay) and host a disco party in an Edo town like setting. Now that’s YANAKIKU!
KIKU：Peaks and valleys. No matter what life may bring, we have to live it to the fullest! We went to Nikko Edo Wonderland to shoot the music video and it was amazing. Check out our Edo disco party!
What are your plans for the end of 2014?
YANA：We’ll be performing somewhere!
KIKU：Book us for a show! (laugh)
What inspired you to become a singer?
YANA：When I was in high school I was in a band, and that’s how my music life began.
KIKU：My all time favorite artist is Namie Amuro! I also love J-pop idols, so I listen, learn, and get my inspiration from them!
Is there any artist in particular that you admire?
YANA：Namie Amuro, Beyonce, and Christina Aguilera. I’ve always been inspired by strong independent female artists.
KIKU：Momoiro Clover Z, Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku, Team Syachihoko, Denpagumi.inc and BABYMETAL. They’re all so cute, but once they’re on stage… boom! Let it be song or dance, they give such powerful performances on stage. I love them for that!
How did you meet ? And how did you decide to form a duet?
YANA：I’ve known Kiku for a long time. We first met at an audition and worked separately for a while, but we always talked about working with each other. So one day we just decided to do it, and we became YANAKIKU.
KIKU：We’ve been together for so long now. These past couple of years, I think I’ve spent more time with Yana than I did with my family. We both have a love for music and want to enjoy life. That’s why we’re together.
Could you share a funny story which happened to you since you debuted?
YANA：We’re both food lovers. Everywhere country we go to, we always end up overeating… and that can become a problem when it comes time to hop into our stage gear. Putting on Kimocos means that we need to tie belts around waist. And sometimes it can get a bit tight! But, that won’t stop us from eating all the delicious foods in your country!
KIKU：Yana and I shared a hotel room when we were in London. And apparently, I sleep talk. Yana told me in the morning that I kept on saying, “Wow. I’m very impressed!” throughout the night. Yana seemed to get a kick out of that, but I don’t remember a thing.
Anime or Movies. Which is you and why?
YANA：I’m definitely more of a movie goer. I get sucked into whatever movie I’m watching and cry or laugh along with the characters in it. Gotta love movies!
KIKU：Anime! Time flies when you’re watching anime! So many unpredictable things happen in anime stories. They’re just so full of dreams!
If one wish would be granted to you, what would you wish for and why?
YANA： My wish would be for everybody in the world to know who we are and fall in love with Japan.
KIKU：To go on a world tour as YANAKIKU! And, hear everybody chanting our name!
