JeA of Brown Eyed Girls dropped her single “You O’Clock” on November 23rd! It is a short and sweet single with two tracks titled “Winter, It’s You” and “You O’Clock”.
Winter, It’s You: This track lives up to its name entirely. It is a slow and sultry track with your typical cold winter style piano backtrack. In this track, JeA truly demonstrates her vocal prowess – she uses complicated vocal techniques and ornamentations that give this track a very r&b and jazzy vibe. One thing I have to say though is that this is a very Mariah Carey-esque track. I had to double check and make sure this wasn’t a cover of one of her songs, everything from the vocal style down to the melody sounds like a number of Mariah Carey songs. It suits JeA though!
You O’Clock: “You O’Clock” is another slow song however this one has more rhythm than the former. Keeping on with the r&b vibe, the synthesised track keeps it simple in order to compliment JeA’s vocals. The drum also provides a slow and repetitive backbeat. I love JeA’s harmonisation in this track however the melody does sound a bit dated, especially when paired with the synthesised brass instruments. Again, JeA shows that she can go above and beyond the average singer’s vocal range and her jazz-meets-r&b vocals are outstanding here.
There isn’t a lot to say about this single album considering that it has only two tracks, however I do feel that is a perfect single for the cold winter months! I give it a 4 out of 5 rating.
