Kalafina are a 3 member baroque pop vocal group consisting of Keiko Kubota, Wakana Otaki and Hikaru Masai. They were formed in 2007 by composer Yuki Kajiura mainly to perform the theme songs for the anime Kara no Kyokai. Kalafina have also turned their talents to performing theme songs for a variety of animes such as Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Zero and Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji).
Soon after their formation, Kalafina (then a duo of Keiko Kubota and Wakana Otaki) held their first full concert in 2008, auditions were held for 2 new members and were picked by Sony Music Japan and Yuki Kajiura. The two new vocalists were Hikaru Masai and Maya Toyoshima. But after only a year in Kalafina, Sony Music Japan announced that Maya would no longer be a member of Kalafina.
Kalafina have been very productive since their debut 7 years ago and so far have released 17 singles, 4 studio albums, 1 EP and 2 compilation albums.
Kalafina’s debut song, Oblivious, peaked at number 8 on the Oricon singles chart and also spent 24 weeks in the chart. The next song to be in the top 10 of the Oricon chart was Hikari no Senritsu in 2010 and peaked at number 7, spending 11 weeks in the charts that year.
Magia, released in 2011, again reached number 7 on the charts and sold over 48,000 copies. Believe, released in 2014, became Kalafina’s 6th best selling single as of March 2015 and was noted in 5 different Japanese charts. It’s peak position was in the Billboard Japan Anime Songs chart where it reached number 5.
Kalafina then released Ring Your Bell in May 2015 which went on to sell 22, 996 copies. Kalafina are also due to release their next single, One Light at the start of August 2015 and I’m sure that it will be a great song and will be peaking high on the Oricon charts. Please don’t hesitate to support Kalafina as they deserve all the support they receive!
