Perfume is a Japanese pop girl group composed by Ayano Omoto, Yuka Kashino and Ayaka Nishiwaki.
But the members use nicknames rather than their real names.
Ayano Omoto‘s nickname is Nocchi.
Yuka Kashino‘s nickname is Kashiyuka.
Ayaka Nishiwaki‘s nickname is A-chan.
What can I say about their sound? It’s a Techno-Pop sound. The group was created when the J-Pop scene was making its transition to the contemporary electronic dance music sound, that incorporated elements of synth-pop, bubblegum pop, dance-pop and house music. Perfume is one of those group with heavily produced vocals, which means the girls’voices are worked by auto-tune and vocoder.
Everything begins inside the young talent academy Actors School Hiroshima, where the group was formed and debuted with their first local single Omajinai Perori on March 21st, 2002. Two singles were only sold in Hiroshima under Momiji Label.
The second chapter of their story happened when they moved to Tokyo, to release their first national single Sweet Donuts on August 6th, 2003. Three singles were released under Bee-Hive Records.
It was also during this period that they had their first three live performances.
Finally, two years later, the girls got their major contract deal with Tokuma Japan Communications and released their major debut single Linear Motor Girl on September 21st, 2005. The song entered on the Oricon charts at number 99.
But the success really came only in July 2007 when the 10th single Polyrhythm became the theme song of NHK’s Recycle Campaign. The single peaked at number 7 on the Oricon charts, becoming their first Top 10 single in Japan. Their next live show was sold out and Perfume became the first idol group to perform at the Summer Sonic music festival.
Since then, all their singles and albums have debuted in the Top 3 and everything they do is a success.
First example with Perfume‘s first studio album Game, which was released on April 16th, 2008 – was their first number 1 album in Japan.
Second example : after the album’s release, Perfume First Tour Game was announced. The group toured 10 cities and sold out all tickets.
Third and last example, 12th single Love the World (Triangle album) was released on July 9, 2008. It became the first technopop song to ever reach number 1 on the Oricon charts.
