Lee Chae-rin, better known by her stage name CL, is the charismatic former leader of the popular YG girl group 2NE1 which disbanded in late 2016. CL is a triple threat; she sings, raps and models. Despite being only 25, CL has achieved great musical feats in the Korean music industry being one of the few Korean artists to make a US debut.
CL has proven her versatility by taking on various concepts during her time in 2NE1. Despite this, one thing remains true: CL has always been a badass. Due to her Americanised style and connection with American starts such as Will.i.am, CL appeal transcends the traditional Hallyu audience. CL’s appeal to a more international audience is also helped by her international upbringing- an edge she has over most Korean stars.
In 2013, CL had her first solo stage with “Baddest Female” a reputation she upheld and built on in 2015 with her track “Hello Bitches“. After much anticipation, CL made her solo US debut, a rare and difficult feat, with her track “Lifted” released on 18th August 2016. “Lifted” proved successful appearing in the top 30 of iTunes’ Hip-Hop/Rap chart on Billboard within three hours of being released.
CL had plenty of success with 2NE1, now it’s her time to be in the spotlight as a soloist. I am sure 2017 will be an exciting year for CL and her fans alike.
