EXID is an acronym for Exceed In Dreaming and currently has 5 members. The group is composed of Solji, LE, Hani, Hyelin and Junghwa. They have had 3 previous members; Yuji, Dami and Haeryung, who all left shortly after debut to pursue other careers and then re-debuted in BESTie. EXID debuted on February 16th 2012 with their single, Who’z That Girl.
EXID were recruited through producer Shinsadong Tiger and AB Entertainment from JYP to form a new girl group. The group originally consisted of Yuji, Dami, Hani, Haeryung, LE and Junghwa and were collectively named WT, an acronym for Who’s That before being named EXID.
EXID were going to debut in January 2012 but had to postpone the date due to a leg injury sustained by LE during rehearsals. AB Entertainment then announced that EXID were going to debut with the single Who’z That Girl and it peaked at 36 on the Gaon Singles Charts. EXID’s first digital single was titled Holla and was released on February 16th 2012 and was met with a muted response.
In April of 2012, AB announced that 3 members of EXID would be leaving, Yuji, Dami and Haeryung, with Solji and Hyelin replacing them. With their new members EXID then returned in August 2012 with a new single, I Feel Good off their first EP, Hippity Hop. On October 2nd they returned again with a digital single, Every Night, which was an alternative version of LE’s self-written song Phone Call (off the album Hippity Hop).
October 11th 2012 saw EXID release Hey Boy, a female cover version of B1A4’s Hey Girl from the MBC sitcom, The Thousandth Man. It was then announced shortly afterwards that 2 members of EXID, Hani and Solji, would be taking part in a sub-unit called “Dasoni”.
The Dasoni sub-unit released their debut single, Goodbye, on February 15th 2013 which also included the song, Said So Often. June 2014 saw EXID announce that they had signed an exclusive contract with Yedang Entertainment and were preparing a comeback with famous producer Shinsadong Tiger, who would also be taking the reins in terms of producing their next album.
On August 24th 2014, EXID held their comeback showcase at Ilchi Art Hall and performed their newest single, Up & Down. The song was then digitally released on August 27th and initially charted very poorly. Three months after it’s debut, the song became viral after a fancam of Hani went viral over South Korean social network sites. Since it’s release Up & Down has sold over a million digital copies in South Korea, becoming the group’s first million selling hit single.
April 2015 saw EXID come back with the song Ah Yeah off their 2nd mini album of the same name. The full video was released on April 13th and shows off their continued popular upbeat and sexy concept. EXID are a great group and deserve a lot of fan love. We hope to see them on a European tour in the coming years.
