Juniel is the stage name of Choi Jun-hee, a young and unique Korean singer-songwriter which strikes not only by her lovely appearance but also because of a stunning voice. First known as Junie, she changed the stage name to Juniel, combining her name Junie with the letter “L”, which stands for “love”.
She started to fall in love with dancing and singing in her teens and thanks to BoA, who was a strong inspiration for her. In high school, she started to play the guitar and as she was just 17, she wrote her first song “Boy”, which was later on included in her first Japanese EP. In fact, Juniel started her career in Japan and only afterwards she began with the promotions in South Korea as well.
As she was studying in Japan, she was one of the may indie artists out there. She gained some fame as she first in an audition program called “Niji Iro Supernova”, beating many outstanding singers.
Back in Korea, she became a trainee under Good Entertainment, which counts G.NA and Wonder Girls’ Yubin as former trainees. Later on, she auditioned for FNC Entertainment and became their trainee the same day as Jung Yong Hwa from CN Blue.
Her official Japanese debut goes back to April 29, 2011 with “Ready Go”. Her music was well received and the result was her being the opening artists for concerts of Oh Won Bin and F.T. Island.
On June 7, 2012, she officially debuted in Korea with the mini-album “My First June” and the the lead track “Illa Illa”, which later became part of the OST of the famous drama “A Gentleman’s Dignity”.
This bright and shiny artist has a remarkable voice despite her young age. She started from the bottom as indie artist, writing their own songs and promoting them through little concerts. With her own effort and a lot of talent, she started to spread her music and finally had the well deserved breakthrough with “1&1”, her second mini-album who reached #4 on the Gaon weekly album charts.
In 2013, she won the Rookie Award at the 27th Golden Disk Awards, she was invited to play at the MIDEM festival in Cannes, France and was appointed honorary ambassador for teenagers at the 2013 Teenage Family Month Ceremony. She also released her first full-length album in Japan (“Juni”) as well as a third mini-album in Korea (“Fall in L”). She also did two collaboration project songs: “Love You More Than Ever” together with Phantom’s Hanhae and “Love Falls” together with CN Blue’s Jonghyun.
Her most recent comeback goes back to September 29th, 2014 with their first single album “I Think I’m in Love”.
JUNIEL is definitely an artist to keep an eye on as she’s constantly improving with every release. She’s not the usual k-pop idol that impresses through stage outfits, group choreographies and focusing on being fierce, cute or sexy, she stands out through her songs, her guitar playing and her natural way of presenting herself.
