Debuting in November of 2014, Lovelyz are the latest group to come from Woolim Entertainment and have made a splash over the past few months, with their innocent blend of cutesy pop.
Consisting of eight members, Baby Soul leads the group, having made a name for herself as a solo artist during 2011, in similar fashion to their visual member, Jiae, who rose to fame in 2013 with her single ‘Delight’. After this, there is the fresh faced, newcomer Kei on lead vocals, while vocalist and lead dancer Miju is a face some people may recognise for her role in Infinite’s video ‘Last Romeo’. Furthermore, lead vocalist Jin has been making the rounds as a solo performer since 2013, while Sujeong and Yein, both on vocals began their musical careers with the conception of the group.
The group arrived with their debut single ‘Candy Jelly Love’, serving as the promotional song for their first full-length album ‘Girls’ Invasion’, which was unfortunately marred by a private controversy, causing lead dancer Jisoo to halt her activities with an indefinite hiatus. This overshadowed their first-impression. However, once it came time for the albums repackage version, ‘Hi’, which reached number four in the national charts, the group have shown that with hard work comes its rewards.
It may be early days still for Lovelyz, but the future should be bright, since their distinct brew of gentleness is a characteristic that oftentimes takes on a secondary role in K-Pop at present. They are taking the easy-listening texture of the genre’s solo artists and reshaping it into a larger format, so this should definitely fare for an interesting listen as they continue to develop over the coming years.
