“We all have goals, but not all of us have the drive. Your dreams are there to not only dream them, but to catch them. Follow your dream more aggressively. If you do so, you’ll soon find yourself within you.” – Roy Kim
When asked why he wanted to win Superstar K4, Roy Kim said he wants to become a recognized musician – he earned his way right to the people’s hearts and is now more than just a contest winner, but a master artist of his craft.
Born on 3rd July 1993, Roy Kim braved the challenge of the music industry to live his dreams through Superstar K4, the fourth season of the well-known South Korean television talent show that aired on 17th August 2012. He joined the Seoul leg of the SSK4 auditions and almost didn’t pass the audition. After singing Damien Rice’s Volcano, the judges asked him to sing a Korean song and then he became one of the 31 successful Seoul hopefuls (out of the 115 total from all the audition sites) who received tickets to the show’s “SuperWeek” where they had to rival each other and face a series of eliminations. It was a tough battle as the contenders were also deserving of the title, but Roy made his way to the top of the twelve finalists through the support of the people who voted through live text poll (60%), pre-broadcast online poll (10%), and also through the judges’ decision (30%). In the end, Roy Kim’s rendition of Who Are You Living For? (스쳐간다) by Leessang and his self-written song for a friend who broke up with his girlfriend, Passing By (스쳐간다), paved his way to win the coveted title.
Back in Asheville School, Roy established an acapella group, Ashefellaz, and also participated in the school’s Chorus, Chamber Choir and musical productions. He was also active in swimming and in soccer, but music has always been his first love. He was accepted in Georgetown University as a Business Major before auditioning for SSK4. Being an international student and a music-lover in his hometown, Seoul, Roy has uploaded a number his recorded performances in his YouTube channel, roykimmusic, that are mostly covers of foreign songs. The videos came with short but sincere messages with “peace, love, happiness” in the end. He said Clara C is one of his biggest inspirations in both music and personality. What made Roy Kim stand out from the other SSK4 contestants was the fact that he wanted to donate the prize instead of using it for his own. He sure is more than just a pretty talented boy, he has a heart that is as big as his dreams.
He made his first official public performance on 30th November 2012 in Hong Kong during the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA). Prior to his debut, Roy has already participated in various programs and has worked as a DJ on MBC Radio FM4U “Hope Songs at Noon”. He also performed at Jason Mraz’s concert in Korea on 17th May. His dedication and passion have brought him to greater heights in his blooming career.
Roy Kim’s music journey has just started and he has already graced us a lot with his music. He is currently promoting his album, Love Love Love, which was launched on 25th June 2013. There will definitely be more to come from this young passionate artist. Roy Kim is definitely a superstar worth our love and support as he continues to touch our hearts with every performance. With Roy Kim around, there will always be peace, love and happiness.
