Could you present yourself to our readers?
Sohn Kyung-ho: Hello, everyone! We’re Victim Mentality from South Korea. We play ‘80s glam and hair metal. Our group has four members. Krocodile handles vocals, I play guitar, Scorpion plays bass, and Tarantula handles drums. It’s nice to meet all of you!
How did you come up with the band name Victim Mentality?
SKH: In the early days of our band, Krocodile and I were chatting with friends. While we were talking, someone mentioned a person with a victim mentality. We liked how the phrase sounded and thought it would make a good band name.
What inspires you to write your songs?
SKH: We draw upon on our own lives when writing songs. A lot of our songs are about the love and sex that many people our age experience. Those experiences are often the sources for our music.
How could you describe your musical style?
SKH: Our music is a mix of glam metal and classic heavy metal. When the band first started, we wanted to play classic heavy metal music like bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, but then we decided to change our sound and style by adding more of a glam metal feel to things.
Why did you decide to go for a ‘80s glam metal fashion style?
SKH: As I mentioned, when we first began Victim Mentality we were trying to be a classic heavy metal act, but then we decided we wanted to have a fancier and sexier image. Glam metal fit well with this, so we changed our musical style and copied the fashions that bands like Motley Crue, Poison, and Cinderella used to wear. We wanted to show the funny and exciting things which made ’80s glam metal awesome.
If you could be an ice cream flavor which one would you be and why?
SKH: I want to be whatever flavor women love!
What is the message you would like to give through your songs?
SKH: We want people to enjoy their lives. We want them to be happy and confident and not to have a victim’s mentality. I hope our music can make people do these things.
What would you like to achieve in 5 years from now?
SKH: We want to make great music that touches people’s lives. That’s our goal for the next 5 years … and for the next 10 and 20 years too! Great music that touches people’s lives becomes timeless. That’s what we hope to achieve as Victim Mentality.
Could you leave a message for your fans?
SKH: Thanks for reading about us! We’re releasing a new album at the end of March called “Heavy Metal Is Back.” We’ll be playing songs from the album this week in Austin, TX at SXSW. SXSW will be our first time performing outside of Korea and we’re super excited about it. We hope some of you can come see us there!
If you can’t come to SXSW, please check out “Heavy Metal Is Back” when it comes out. If you’re a fan of ‘80s glam metal, we promise you’ll love this album. And even if you’re not familiar with glam metal, still give the album a listen. It’s a lot of fun and we’re sure you’ll be entertained and happy while listening to it. Keep metal alive!
